I know this sounds bitchy but I wish they had kept facebook college exclusive so people like this wouldn't participate in online debates over Proposition 8 and make me upset:

Elizabeth George:

If they took away a right I had I'd either deal with it or move. They can deal with it or move, too. Have them go to Massachusetts. I've moved plenty of times when my family had 'no money' to do so, so money isn't an option. >_> Many people are 'moving to California' to get married while they can, so why don't they move to Massachusetts while they're at it? 9_9

Marriage = between man and woman. If ya don't fit the bill, you can't have the title. It's a rule of sorts. You don't change the rules to Tic Tac Toe and still expect it to be called Tic Tac Toe. Tic Tac Toe = Marriage. Advanced Tic Tac Toe, or any variation of it called a different name = civil union.

??????????????????

Hi Sondra,

I was wondering if there was a large format scanner that I could possibly use in the GSD building. I've asked others in the studio and they've said it was complicated and not really supposed to be for us to use.

I wanted to do a written analysis of the Carpenter center but first wanted to scan in my 1/16th scale drawing and lay the typed analysis on top of it. Would that work?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Glen

hi Glen,

There is a large-format scanner in the basement of Gund Hall, in the basement computer labm but it is complicated to use, and I've heard that there isn't any more clear acetate that one has to use to cover a drawing before feeding it into the scanner. My suggestion would be, for this weekend, to just make another 1/16" drawing, and diagram on top of it. You could also photograph the drawing and photoshop on top of it, using diagrams and words.

Good luck, and please email back if this doesn't make sense.

Things I realized this week

1. People are nice. People also suck.
2. No one is intrinsically interesting.
3. Caffeine is not a sufficient solution to a week full attempted suicide of an acquintance, a full time job, three classes, design work, party, and the ordinary stresses of near-quarter-life.
4. I don't deserve anything except that which I get with my own efforts.
5. I should aim for excellence but be proud nonetheless when it comes out merely competent.
6. I am an adult. (This revelation came when I discovered I no longer had the desire to write long-winded, narcissistic posts about my admittedly banal existence.)
7. I should always do what I know in my heart to be the right thing.
8. Life is tough and it's going to get tougher (not that I am as of yet a model citizen).

Each building tried to be modern and contemporary with a mix of glass and brick, but it just looks unfriendly and cold. Which is actually a good description of Boston in the winter.
here is what the australian director of the architecture firm where i work at (who screamed at me on the phone that one time) wrote for an introduction to a master plan report.

i wonder if anyone can possibly make sense of this, because i can't for the life of me.

______ has the potential to become an emblematic public space by simultaneously learning the significant lessons of history and having the courage to forget them in the creation of a space suitable for the enactment of contemporary community in all its diverse and often inescapably contradictory expressions.
it must be a space whose only tension is embedded within its surface: a public stage for the theatre of life to be played out in both its everyday scenes and its dramatic collective experiences and its festive celebrations of culture’s diversity and unbound life’s fecundity.
civic squares have traditionally served to contrasting yet complimentary roles in cities. they are the places where the citizens of a place enact and represent their community identity. in contrast they are places where visitors and strangers are greeted, and their community represents itself to strangers.
contemporary civic spaces integrate civic events and cultural activity within a framework of commercial activity that extends from the everyday to the expositional.
the diversity of the spaces is made coherent in time through the memory of events and the accrued enactment of collective experiences.
squares are places that can be vibrant and activity filled, or places of quiet lingering and solitude. they are places of strident as well as of musical expression. they use the night to create another life, complimentary but distinctly different to the day. the significant experiential registers of public art with the sensory and symbolic presence of water should be integrated into a coherent and unified design by a co-operative working and consultative method that will, in its outcome, create the image of a single creative hand.
civic spaces must be inclusive, offering something to every specialist, cultural or national group, where they can proudly express the singularity of identity and their heritage, whilst actively contributing to the creation of new forms of collective community expression. activation of spatial edges and movement pathways creates both the basis of human theatre and the means for its safety.
the variety of spontaneous and organized spectacle within spaces provides the animation that brings them continually to life, engaging different audiences and constituencies. the alliance of material specificity and unique design contribute to the creation of a distinctive and exclusive identity for the square. it must suggest a memory of its specific location whilst simultaneously looking forward, providing an image of the future which can also suggest comfort and security in change.
digital and screen media are part of our everyday culture and increasingly part of our contemporary understanding of civic activity. so the engagement with digital media; whether through one-to-one communication or in the collective experience of major events, either from around the world or of national interest, demonstrates the vital evolution of public life. the square will be a place where the city’s evolving and emerging identity will be enacted.

Good God. Simon Pegg is going to be in the new Star Trek movie as Scotty.

Should it bother me that I'm at an internet cafe and there was a group of guys of south asian?/middle eastern? origin standing around gawking at hardcore porn and quite possibly saying lewd things while I was lamely pretending not to notice. I mean, I'm far from porn-squeamish but come on, an internet cafe?? I was half expecting one of them to whip it out....
I'm now living off of Brick Lane in east London, which is an area which is half-hipster and half Bangladesh. There is literally a bridge where the white part ends and the ethnic part begins. I am, living in the ethnic part and eating curry everyday and probably smell terrible (or delicious?) to everyone now.
My landlord is a knight (as in, knighted by the queen) who is a billion years old and who is quite posh and all that. He has a Maserati and a Picasso makes more money than should be legal for what he does; God knows why he is renting his spare room to me. His flat has SECRET PASSAGES. I'm terrified of going anywhere in it because I got lost the first time I moved in and had to wake him up to tell me how to get to my room.
I wonder what would happen if I burned my passport? Would I be stateless?
